What a Difference a Haircut Makes

Everyone knows how big an image shift a simple haircut can make… But nobody personifies this better than one of the coolest people ever: DOCTOR WHO!

DOCTOR WHO!

This was really just an excuse to post pictures of David Tennant. I’m not gay, but I would totally pretend for David. /swoon

Poor Samuel, the Pivot Point Mannequin

Well we took Sam down to a flat top (EW!) and a fade (DOUBLE EW!) in class… Poor Sam, he’s so ugly now.

Samuel Mannequin Flat Top

I was surprised that the other girls in the class had a very hard time doing the flat top, because to me it seems like the easiest (although ugliest) thing you could do to hair. They also had a hard time trimming his beard into a style. I think maybe it’s just a guy thing – I’ve have more clipper experience. The girls in class kick my ass at girl hair styling, with curlers and whatnot, because they’ve had more experience with those things. (Or at least, that’s what I tell myself…)

Samuel Mannequin Fade

Hey look, it's K-Fed!

Check out the big disc of hair just behind Sam’s apex – they went crazy putting hair in that one spot, and then put thin hair all over the rest of him. lol

I really like cutting men’s hair. It’s too bad most men don’t want to go to a male stylist. But oh well, in the town I live in all I’d be able to do anyway is an endless series of faux hawks.

They love the faux hawks here. It’s like the official town haircut.

Sam’s Hair Gets Shorter

Today we highlighted Sam’s hair again – this time with an ugly (in my opinion) application to the tips, and also with the “shoe shine” technique. Very 90′s looking. We used Ex-Lite w/ 30 Volume developer and tried to lift it as much as we could. Then we put a 7.4 demi-permanent color all over his head, which darkened the highlights some and added a slight orangey copper tinge to everything.

We also did a medium gradation on the back, up to the occipital area, using shears over comb, and blended in with taper shears over comb around the ridge line/weight area.  In my case I went through and trimmed his interior a bit with some heavy notching, and removed the corners from an early (ugly!) cut.

Monday is our first male cut on a model. W00t!

Sammy Gets More Cuts

More work on Samuel, our guy mannequin. Here’s his first cut:

A bit silly if you ask me. (Might be the mustache though. We were supposed to trim it off when we trimmed the bear, but Samuel was adamant that his ‘stache stay.)

And the second cut:

This one was a planar/uniform cut. The interior sculpted on a plane above his head, and the sides/back above the occipital bone were done with…well…kind of planar…? I’m a little confused on that actually. We cut it planar but people still kept calling it uniform… The nape was uniform anywhoo.
