DJ Muldoon & Friends

Last night I witnessed a bona-fied event in the new world of hairdressing – DJ Muldoon, with two other stylists, doing a live class/demo/presentation and streaming it over the internet, Josh XO style!

I found it from a link a friend posted on Facebook, they found it from a link their friend posted on Facebook, and so on. I started watching immediately, told all my friends, and within 30 minutes everyone was watching – and 30 minutes after that Hairbrained.me had found out about it and put it on their front page.

Now that is some real social networking at play. It was very cool, and really made me feel like I’ve come to this industry at the perfect time. It’s all shifting, adjusting, and redefining – and it’s fun to be involved while it’s reconfiguring itself to what the industry will be in the future!

But all my blabbing aside, go here and click on archived videos to watch what they were broadcasting live last night.

DJ said at the end that they’re doing another class on the 27′th – hopefully it will be broadcast too!

Edmonton ABA

Hey folks! Went to the ABA in Edmonton (ABA is the largest hair show in Canada, for those who live in warmer places). Wandered around, forced myself not to spend too much, avoided the pushy salesmen selling crappy no-name bejeweled and colorful shears.

I didn’t bother taking too many pictures or videos, but I I liked a bit of what I saw at Tony Ricci’s stage and the Sebastian stage:

With Apologies

Sorry for the lack of… well, anything. I’ve been enjoying my off time between the end of school and the start of my new job (1 week to go!) and have decided that damn it, I’m just going to relax during these two weeks. (Which is the first time I’ve ever attempted to actually take time off of doing stuff, ever)

So every day since I finished school, I’ve done about an hour of intense cardio, followed by some yoga. The first week kicked my ass – but I can already feel the difference, especially in my lower back. It feels much tighter and less like I’m going to hurt myself just leaning over a sink!

And I’m also using this time to learn to beatbox.

Yes, you read that right. I’ma be the funky fresh beatboxin hair stylist!

Anyway, I won’t turn this into a “Today I made myself an egg sandwhich, and I played with my dog, and I watched Dr. Phil” type blog, so I should stop now.

In other potentially big news, I’ve started a new website. Local to the city I’m in, with the hopes of getting some people here to figure out what this whole “internet” thing is – and getting the scattered few that have an internet presence gathered together in one place. I’m cautiously pondering the possibility of moving this blog over to that website, but… I’m also a little nervous. Because there’s a lot of…  what Robert Cromeans probably never meant when he said “Dangerous Dialogue”. Picture in your minds the letters to the editor section of a newspaper, and you’ll have a good idea. Many authors, one site, heavy opinions.

And I think I would rather keep this blog separate from all of that to maintain my professional image. Especially considering if they’re associated, there’s a chance my clients could find the site (since it’s named after the city I live in) and read an opinion they find horribly disagreeable (written by me or someone else, it probably wouldn’t matter), and BAM – there goes a client.

It’s not 2001 anymore, and the need to maintain a professional online presence is important.

Release Forms Pt. 2

There’s a thread over on Hairmaven.com that turned to the subject of release forms, and I wanted to share some information I posted there because it might be useful to any stylists out there looking for advice on doing their own photoshoots/creative work. Ready my replies below, or click here to go to the full thread: Creatively Stifled in my current salon

And of course you can check out/rip off my own release forms that I posted awhile back: Model / Makeup Artist Release Forms

If you want this type of release form, go to a beauty school, say you want a haircut, steal the form they ask you to sign and run for the hills!
It’ll be better than what you can draft yourself, because they almost certainly had an actual lawyer write theirs, and it will be tailored to that location as well. Just a few alterations and it’ll be perfectly suited to your use.

Compensation can be monetary, goods, or services. Depending on your agreement, and how you word your release forms, the haircut or color could be considered the compensation. Or you could give them a dollar. Or give them photos from the shoot and allow them the use of the photos you elect to give them in some way.
All of those are considered valid compensation, and the release forms usually don’t need to specify what the compensation is – they most often just include something that says that by signing, the model has accepted the compensation which has been assumed to have been provided.

I agree, I always allow everyone involved the non-commercial usage rights of select photos I give them after the shoot – I.E. web-sized pictures of my choosing. (Otherwise they’ll start asking for every single photo full sized, they’ll start putting up the worst photos from the shoot all over the internet because those are the photos in which their boobs looked super boob-ified, and everyone will see the bad photos and your name and think “OH MY GOD THIS PERSON SUCKS!”. If I had a nickle…)

The copyright should go to the photographer. Period. Unless you are paying the photographer a significant amount of money (Read: Quadruple digits), they should still be the photographer’s photos. That doesn’t mean you can’t have all the rights and “ownership” of the photos you want though – Usage rights is what you should be interested in, if you’re not the photographer on the shoot.

You want the right to use the photos commercially (meaning you can sell them), you want the right to alter the photos in part or in whole or combine them with other media or forms of media (meaning you can crop, photoshop, or whatever the photos, and that you can include the photo or parts of the photo in any design or image you may make in the future), and you want the right to assign usage rights (because this is how you sell a photo to a magazine. They’re not buying literal photos from you, they’re buying usage rights to publish the photos.).

I would suggest you give yourself usage rights in perpetuity (I.E. Forever), because while at times it seems like only having the photos for 10 years but getting a bit more money might be the best way to go, I can guarantee you that there will come a point that you’ll wish you still had the usage rights to your work.

Legitimate modeling agencies can be hit or miss if you don’t already have a reputation and portfolio, but you can absolutely find tons of great models in everyday life. I always make sure I have some photos of my work when I approach people, because they’ll usually shrug you off if you don’t. And most of the time they won’t be interested, but it’s just a numbers game. Keep pulling the lever until you hit the jackpot!

Also if you are desperate, you can try sites like modelmayhem. But if you do post a casting call there, don’t even bother replying to anyone who has any hint of an attitude – it’s an amatuer, gong show of a model networking site.

Hope this info helps!

What’s It Like Being a Guy in Hair School? (Also, MyChair iPhone App)

One of the questions I have heard a lot since going to hair school, is “What’s it like being a guy and going to hair school with a bunch of girls?”

I’m going to answer that in the form of a music video:

Also, I’ve been on the lookout for a good iPhone app for hair stylists. I want something to quickly and easily keep track of schedules, services, tips, etc… And all the stuff I’ve found is either free/cheap and sucks, or expensive and part of a complete salon management system. (Do I look like I want to run an entire salon from an iPhone app? Do I really need to swipe credit cards directly on my phone?)

I’ve been sorting through a whole bunch of them, and so far the one that has most piqued my interest is MyChair. Check out their website to see some great videos of it in use! Their website is quite well put together, and the videos were sufficiently enticing to make me want to buy the app… except that I can’t afford to right now. (Yes, that’s how tight my budget is – I can’t afford a $14.99 iPhone app. That’s what hair school will do to you!)

But it looks like it beats the other stuff out for what I want, so I’m sure I’ll buy it eventually and I’ll put up a review of it when I can.
